Tawk.to charges nothing and caps nothing: unlimited agents, unlimited chats, unlimited websites, and it has stayed that way since 2013. For a one-person shop that needs a chat bubble, that’s hard to argue with. It helps to know why it’s free, though. The software isn’t the product. The company sells the humans behind it at $1 an hour, plus $29 a month to remove its branding and AI Assist from $29 a month.
The best Tawk.to alternatives in 2026 are: 1) ThriveDesk, for a help desk, live chat and knowledge base in one flat-priced plan; 2) Freshdesk, for a ticket-first team; 3) Tidio, for low-cost ecommerce chat; 4) Intercom, for SaaS messaging; 5) Crisp, for per-workspace pricing; and 6) Gorgias, for Shopify order support.
We compared them on what each one includes once chat stops being enough, how each one charges, and where the free plans stop. Every price below was read on the vendor’s pricing page on 21 September 2026.
What Tawk.to does well, and where it hurts
Tawk.to is a live chat widget with a basic ticketing inbox and a knowledge base attached, all free, run by a company that makes its money from services. Around 200 reviewers on G2 rate it 4.5 out of 5, and most of them say the same two things: the price can’t be beaten, and the admin interface shows its age.
What’s free
- Unlimited agents, chats and websites, with no time limit.
- Live chat with visitor monitoring, triggers and canned responses.
- A basic ticketing inbox and a knowledge base.
- 24/7 chat and email support from tawk.to itself.
What costs money
- Remove branding: $29 a month to drop “Powered by tawk.to” from the widget.
- AI Assist: from $29 a month, answering from your knowledge base.
- Hired chat agents: $1 an hour for tawk.to’s own staff to answer your chats.
- Virtual assistants: from $7 an hour for admin, design and bookkeeping work.
Why teams look for alternatives
- The inbox is a chat log, not a help desk. Ticketing exists, but assignment rules, SLAs and team reporting are thin, so a queue of 50 conversations a day gets managed in people’s heads.
- The interface costs clicks. It’s the most common complaint on G2: everyday tasks take more steps than they should, and a team that lives in the tool all day feels each one.
- Support is for a free product. It’s available around the clock, which is generous, but you’re not the customer. The $1-an-hour agents are the business, and the roadmap follows the business.
- There’s no store data in the conversation. Order status, refunds and subscription details live in another tab, so ecommerce teams copy order numbers between windows.
- Growing means leaving. Once you need a knowledge base that deflects chats, automation that routes them, or channels beyond chat, there’s no plan to upgrade to, only a different product.

How we evaluated
Six tools, chosen from the switches we actually see rather than the biggest names. For each one we looked at what’s included once chat isn’t enough: ticketing, a knowledge base, automation, and channels beyond the widget. Then how it charges, because per-seat, per-workspace, per-ticket and per-resolution models produce very different bills at the same volume. Free plans counted, along with exactly where they stop. Where a vendor’s own page and a third-party write-up disagreed, we went with the vendor.
1. ThriveDesk: help desk, live chat and knowledge base in one

ThriveDesk is AI customer service software for ecommerce: an agentic omnichannel helpdesk, intelligent chatbot, modern help center and powerful reporting, plus Neo, the AI agent that answers customers around the clock. It’s built for small support teams at online stores and SaaS companies that have outgrown a chat widget but don’t want an enterprise help desk, and it prices the whole thing per plan rather than per agent. Here’s what each part does.
A shared inbox instead of a chat log

Email, chat and the contact form land in one queue, and the team works it together. Collision detection shows who’s already replying, so two people never answer the same customer. Assignment rules route by tag, subject or priority, saved replies keep the common answers consistent, and custom views give each agent a filtered inbox by status, tag or assignee. Agents can even reply from their own email client and it stays in sync.
Neo does the repetitive part

Neo is the AI agent on every plan, with no per-resolution fee. It answers the common questions on its own, so the queue only holds the ones that need a person. For your team, Copilot drafts replies you can send or edit, summarises a long thread before you read it, and rewrites a message to be shorter or friendlier. Workflow rules handle the tagging, routing and follow-ups around it.
One widget for chat, forms, orders and articles

The chat widget is the piece a Tawk.to user recognises, with more behind it. Customers can chat with Neo or a person, send a message through the contact form, look up an order without asking anyone, and search the help center, all from the same bubble.
Store and billing data inside the conversation

Connect WooCommerce, Shopify, SureCart, Stripe or Paddle and the customer’s orders, subscriptions and payments show next to the message. Agents can update an order or check a refund from the reply instead of opening another tab.
A help center that takes questions off the queue

The help center is a knowledge base with a block editor, AI help for first drafts, and AI search that works inside the widget too. The article count grows and the chat count doesn’t.
What it costs
Basic is $29 a month for 2 teammates and 1 inbox, Standard is $69 for 5 teammates and 2 inboxes, and Unlimited is $129 for unlimited teammates and 5 inboxes. Annual billing takes those to $19, $49 and $99. Every plan includes Neo and support, and there are no per-agent add-ons. The trial is 7 days, no card required.
Why teams evaluate ThriveDesk as a Tawk.to alternative
- It’s the upgrade path Tawk.to doesn’t have. The chat stays, and ticketing, a knowledge base and automation arrive around it instead of in a second tool.
- The order is in the reply. The “where’s my package” question gets answered from the ticket, with the order on screen.
- The bill doesn’t move with headcount. Unlimited teammates on the top plan, no per-seat fees and no metered AI, which is the opposite of most tools on this list.
2. Freshdesk: best for a ticket-first team

Freshdesk is the Zendesk-shaped option at a lower price: a ticketing system first, with a knowledge base, automation and reporting built around it. It suits teams that want queues, structure and SLAs more than a chat bubble.
Top features
- Ticket views, routing rules and SLA policies that a chat tool won’t give you.
- A customer-facing knowledge base and portal on every plan.
- Freddy AI Copilot for agents at $29 an agent a month, on Pro and Enterprise only.
- Freshchat, Freshcaller and the rest of the Freshworks suite as separate products.
Why teams evaluate it as a Tawk.to alternative
It’s the cleanest jump from a chat log to real ticketing. Two catches. The free program now covers 2 agents for six months, after which you need a paid plan: Growth at $19 an agent a month, Pro at $55, Enterprise at $89, all billed annually. And live chat isn’t in Freshdesk; it’s Freshchat, on its own bill. See the full ThriveDesk vs Freshdesk comparison, or the migration guide if you’re leaving it.
3. Tidio: best for low-cost ecommerce chat

Tidio is a chat and chatbot tool for online stores, most at home with Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce merchants who want to recover carts and answer product questions from the widget. It isn’t a help desk and doesn’t claim to be.
Top features
- Native Shopify, WooCommerce and BigCommerce integrations, so orders show up in chat.
- Pre-built chatbot flows for cart recovery, lead capture and common questions.
- Lyro, an AI agent that answers from your content, priced by conversation.
- 10 operator seats on every plan, including the free one.
Why teams evaluate it as a Tawk.to alternative
It’s the closest like-for-like: a modern widget with bots, for a store. The free plan covers 50 billable conversations a month, Starter is $24.17 for 100, and Growth starts at $49.17 for up to 2,000. Lyro AI starts at $32.50 a month for 50 conversations, and Plus starts at $300 plus usage.
What you don’t get is ticketing, a knowledge base or support reporting, so the moment email support matters, Tidio becomes the chat layer on top of something else.
4. Intercom: best for SaaS messaging

Intercom set the template for in-app messaging in SaaS: the chat widget, behavioural targeting, product tours and now Fin, its AI agent. If your customers live inside your product, nothing else on this list feels as native.
Top features
- A conversational inbox with more automation and targeting than any other tool here.
- Fin AI Agent, which resolves common questions on its own, at $0.99 an outcome.
- Product tours, surveys and outbound messages in the same tool.
- Copilot for agents at $29 a seat a month billed annually, or $35 monthly.
Why teams evaluate it as a Tawk.to alternative
It’s the other end of the scale: Tawk.to is free and thin, Intercom is deep and priced like it. Essential is $29 a seat a month, Advanced $85, Expert $132, and Fin is metered on top with no included volume, so 1,500 resolutions add $1,485 to a month.
The startup programme takes 93% off in year one, which is why so many teams meet the full price in year two. The ThriveDesk vs Intercom page walks through the numbers, and there’s a migration guide for teams moving out.
5. Crisp: best for per-workspace pricing

Crisp is a French messaging platform for small teams: a clean live chat with a light help desk, chatbots and campaigns behind it. Its pricing is the reason it makes shortlists.
Top features
- One price per workspace, with seats included: 2 on the free plan, 4 on Mini, 10 on Essentials.
- Chatbots, canned replies and drip campaigns on the paid plans.
- AI credits bundled into each tier, roughly 90 automated conversations on Mini.
- Unlimited conversations on every plan, including the free one.
Why teams evaluate it as a Tawk.to alternative
It keeps Tawk.to’s best trait, a free plan with unlimited conversations, and adds a real product behind it. Mini is $45 a month per workspace and Essentials is $95 for 10 seats, which at ten people is cheaper than most tools here, ThriveDesk included. The trade-off is depth: ticketing and the knowledge base are lighter than a dedicated help desk, the widget has fewer customisation options, and one workspace means one brand.
6. Gorgias: best for Shopify order support

Gorgias is the help desk built around the Shopify order. Agents see the order, edit it, refund it and answer the ticket from one screen, which is why so many Shopify stores run on it.
Top features
- Order edits, refunds and subscription changes from inside the ticket.
- The deepest Shopify integration available, with WooCommerce and BigCommerce supported too.
- Seats aren’t metered: 3 on Starter, 500 from Basic upward.
- AI Agent on every plan, charged per resolution.
Why teams evaluate it as a Tawk.to alternative
For a Shopify store it answers the question Tawk.to can’t: where’s my package. Pricing is by ticket, not by seat. Starter is $10 a month for 50 tickets, Basic $60 for 300, Pro $360 for 2,000 and Advanced $900 for 5,000, billed monthly, with annual billing about 16% less.
Past your allowance you pay $0.36 to $0.40 a ticket, and AI resolutions are metered at $0.90 to $1.00 each and count as tickets too, so a good Black Friday is a bigger invoice. Outside ecommerce it’s the wrong tool. See ThriveDesk vs Gorgias.
How to choose between these Tawk.to alternatives
- You want structure more than chat: Freshdesk. Best ticketing on the list.
- You sell on Shopify and the ticket is the order: Gorgias. Best order tooling, at a per-ticket price.
- Your customers live inside a SaaS product: Intercom. Best in-app messaging, with the biggest bill.
- You need chat and bots for a store, nothing more: Tidio. Cheapest chat with AI.
- Ten people, one brand, small budget: Crisp. Best price per seat.
- You need the help desk, the chat and the knowledge base together, and a bill that stays put: ThriveDesk.
Put your team size and ticket volume into the help desk cost calculator before you decide. Per-seat and per-ticket prices cross over at different sizes, and the cheapest tool at three people is rarely the cheapest at ten.
Why teams choose ThriveDesk over Tawk.to
Teams leave Tawk.to for the same reason they picked it: they wanted support to be simple. It stayed simple, and the work didn’t. Here’s what changes.
One queue instead of a chat log. Email, chat and the contact form land in the same shared inbox, with assignment rules, tags and collision detection, so nobody answers a customer twice and nothing waits in a browser tab someone closed.
Customers find the answer before they ask. The help center sits inside the chat widget with AI search, so the repeat questions stop reaching the queue. That’s the deflection Tawk.to’s knowledge base is too thin to deliver.
The order is in the conversation. With WooCommerce, Shopify, SureCart, Stripe or Paddle connected, the agent sees the purchase next to the message and can change it from there. Neo can answer the order-status question on its own.
The price is the price. $29 a month on Basic, $69 on Standard, $129 for unlimited teammates on Unlimited, with Neo and support included and no per-agent or per-resolution meter. Migration from Intercom, Help Scout or Zendesk is free and done for you. The migration guides cover the steps, and the comparison pages put ThriveDesk next to every tool on this list.
