A small business loses the sale in the gap between a question and an answer. A visitor asks whether the blue one ships to Ireland, waits four minutes, and buys from the shop that answered. Live chat closes that gap, if the tool fits a team of two to ten people who also answer email and pack orders.
The best live chat software for small business in 2026 is: 1) ThriveDesk, for chat, email and a help center in one flat-priced workspace; 2) Tidio, for the most usable free plan; 3) Freshchat, for a team that will grow into the Freshworks suite; 4) LiveChat, for a team that lives in chat all day; 5) Help Scout, for email-first support with a light chat widget; 6) Intercom, for SaaS product messaging; and 7) Drift, for B2B sales teams rather than support.
We ranked them on what a small team gets on the first paid plan, how the bill moves when a third agent joins, and whether the chat lands in the same inbox as the email and the order. Every price below was read on the vendor’s pricing page on 21 September 2026.
What counts as live chat software for a small business
Three kinds of tool answer to the name, and they cost very different amounts a year in.
- A chat widget. LiveChat and Drift. The chat is the product; tickets, a knowledge base and a bot are other products or other vendors.
- A widget with a bot. Tidio and Freshchat. Chat plus automation for the questions you’re tired of typing, metered by conversation or by agent.
- A help desk with chat built in. ThriveDesk, Help Scout and Intercom. The chat is one channel into an inbox that also holds email, a knowledge base and, in ThriveDesk’s case, the order.
For a small team the third kind usually wins, because the same two people answer everything. The exception is a store that only wants a bubble on the product page. That’s the first kind, and it’s cheaper.
How we evaluated
Five questions, asked of every tool in the same order. Prices are the entry paid plan, monthly unless the vendor only publishes annual rates.
- What does the first paid plan include? Chat alone, or chat with an inbox, a knowledge base and a bot. Most small teams buy the first plan and stay on it for a year.
- What happens to the bill at three agents? Per-seat tools triple. Flat plans don’t move. That’s usually the number that decides the renewal.
- Is there a free plan, and where does it stop? A conversation cap, a seat cap or a feature wall. We say which.
- Does chat share a queue with email? If the follow-up email lands in a different tool, the chat widget has created a second inbox to check.
- Does the tool know the order? A live chat that shows the WooCommerce or Shopify order beside the message answers the most common question before the agent types.

1. ThriveDesk: best for chat, email and a help center in one workspace

ThriveDesk is AI customer service software for ecommerce: an agentic omnichannel helpdesk, intelligent chatbot, modern help center and powerful reporting, plus Neo, the AI agent that answers customers around the clock. It’s built for small businesses and online stores, with live chat, a shared inbox for email and a help center in one workspace, and you pay for the plan rather than for each person in it. A two-person shop and a ten-person support team both get the whole product. Support from the ThriveDesk team comes with every plan; it isn’t a paid tier.
Shared inbox

Chats and emails land in the same shared inbox, so a conversation that starts in the widget and continues by email stays one thread. Assignment rules route by tag, subject or priority. Collision detection shows who’s already replying, saved replies keep the wording consistent, and custom views give each agent a filtered queue of their own.
Neo, the AI agent

Neo answers from your help center content. In the chat widget it handles the after-hours question on its own and collects a lead when nobody’s online. The moment the visitor asks for a person, it hands over. It’s included in every plan with no per-resolution fee. For agents, Copilot drafts replies from the same content, summarises a long thread before you open it, and expands, shortens or translates a message in one click.
The chat widget

One widget carries live chat, a contact form, an order lookup and a search box over your help center. A visitor can check where the parcel is without starting a chat, and the ones who do start a chat arrive with the page they were on already attached. On the Unlimited plan, visitor tracking shows who’s on the site right now.
Store and billing data in the conversation

Connect WooCommerce, Shopify, SureCart, Easy Digital Downloads, Freemius, Stripe or Paddle and the customer’s orders, subscriptions and payments sit beside the message. An agent can change an order status or check a licence from the conversation, which is the difference between “let me look that up” and an answer.
Help center

The help center has a block editor that feels like Notion, AI writing that turns a ticket reply into an article, and AI search inside the widget. Standard includes a public help center. Unlimited adds private and multiple help centers, so a SaaS can keep customer docs and partner docs apart.
What it costs
Basic is $29 a month for two teammates and one inbox, with live chat included. Standard is $69 for five teammates, two inboxes, the public help center, workflow automation and the MCP server. Unlimited is $129 for unlimited teammates and five inboxes. Annual billing drops those to $19, $49 and $99. Every plan comes with a 7-day trial, no card, and support at no extra charge. Extra inboxes are $15 a month if you outgrow the plan’s allowance before you outgrow the plan.
Best for: a team of two to ten that answers chat and email from one queue and sells through WooCommerce, SureCart or a SaaS billing tool.
Limitations: there’s a trial but no free plan, Basic stops at two teammates, and Shopify stores get order lookups rather than the in-ticket order editing Gorgias offers. The comparison pages put ThriveDesk beside each tool on this list.
2. Tidio: best free plan for a one-person shop

Tidio is a live chat and chatbot tool that grew up on Shopify and WooCommerce stores. The widget carries chat and email tickets, Flows builds no-code bots for abandoned carts and product questions, and Lyro is the AI agent that answers from your content. Reviewers on G2 rate it 4.6 out of 5 from about 1,950 reviews, and the free plan is the usual way in.
That free plan covers 50 billable conversations a month and 100 visitors reached by Flows. Starter is $24.17 a month, Growth starts at $49.17 and Plus starts at $300 plus usage. Lyro is a separate add-on from $32.50 a month for 50 AI conversations. Annual billing gives two months free, so Starter works out at $290.04 a year. The Shopify and WooCommerce apps put product cards and order lookups inside the chat, which is the feature that keeps small stores on it.
Best for: a one-person store that needs a chat bubble, a few bots and nothing else on day one.
Limitations: the plans meter conversations, so a busy month moves you up a tier, and the email ticketing is thin next to a help desk. The bot and the AI agent are priced separately from the chat.
3. Freshchat: best if you’ll grow into the Freshworks suite

Freshchat is the messaging half of Freshworks: web chat, WhatsApp, Messenger and Instagram in one agent inbox, with Freddy AI for bots and reply suggestions. It’s rated 4.4 on G2 from about 500 reviews, and the free plan is the most generous on seats of any tool here.
Free covers up to 10 agents. Growth is $19 per agent a month billed annually, Pro is $49 and Enterprise is $79. Freddy AI Copilot adds $29 per agent a month, and the Freddy AI Agent is $49 per 100 sessions. Email ticketing lives in Freshdesk, a second product with its own bill, and neither one was built with a WooCommerce store in mind.
Best for: a team that already runs Freshdesk or Freshsales, or plans to, and wants chat from the same vendor.
Limitations: per-agent pricing, and chat and email split across two products. If the suite is the draw, read ThriveDesk vs Freshdesk before you commit to it.
4. LiveChat: best for a team that lives in chat all day

LiveChat does one thing well. The agent app shows who’s on the site, what they’ve looked at and what they typed before they hit send, and it plugs into more than 200 tools. Reviewers on G2 give it 4.4 from about 790 reviews; the recent complaints are about tickets moving to a separate paid product.
Starter is $19 per person a month billed annually ($25 monthly), Team is $49 ($59) and Business is $79 ($89). Enterprise is quote-based. Every plan has a 14-day trial, and Text Intelligence, the vendor’s AI layer, is included rather than metered. A knowledge base, a ticketing tool and a chatbot are each sold separately under the Text brand, so the full stack costs more than the chat plan suggests.
Best for: a team of dedicated chat agents that handles email somewhere else and wants the deepest visitor tracking on this list.
Limitations: per-person pricing, and there’s no email inbox, so the follow-up lives in another tool. Our LiveChat alternatives post covers who moves and why.
5. Help Scout: best for email-first support with a light chat widget

Help Scout is a shared inbox with a knowledge base, Docs, and a chat widget, Beacon, that lives on every plan including the free one. It reads like email, which is why small teams like it, and it holds 4.4 on G2 from 423 reviews. Beacon can offer a Docs article before it opens a chat, which suits a team that would rather deflect first.
Free covers 5 users, 1 inbox and 1 Docs site. Standard is $25 per user a month, Plus is $45 and Pro is $75, with about 16% off on annual billing. AI Answers, the bot that resolves conversations on its own, is $0.75 per resolution on top. An extra inbox is $12 a month.
Best for: a team whose queue is mostly email and wants chat as a side door rather than the front one.
Limitations: the bill is per user, chat is the least developed part of the product, and store data means the Shopify app or a third-party connector. ThriveDesk vs Help Scout goes through the two side by side.
6. Intercom: best for SaaS product messaging

Intercom is a messaging platform first and a help desk second: in-app messages, product tours, outbound campaigns and Fin, the AI agent that now leads its pitch. It holds 4.5 on G2 from more than 3,000 reviews, and it’s the tool most SaaS teams compare everything else against.
Essential is $29 per seat a month billed annually, Advanced is $85 and Expert is $132. Fin is charged on top from $0.99 per resolution, and Copilot, the agent-side AI, is $29 per agent a month. There’s a 14-day trial and no free plan. Early-stage startups can apply for a steep first-year discount. That’s how many small SaaS teams start on it, and why the renewal comes as a surprise.
Best for: a SaaS with an onboarding flow to run inside the product and a budget that can absorb per-seat plus per-resolution pricing.
Limitations: two meters on one bill, and most of the platform is aimed at marketing rather than a support queue. See ThriveDesk vs Intercom for the support-only comparison.
7. Drift: best for B2B sales teams, not support

Drift, part of Salesloft since 2024, is conversational marketing: bots that qualify a visitor, book a meeting on a rep’s calendar, and hand a hot account to sales with the company’s details attached. Video chat and account-based playbooks sit on top. Reviewers on G2 rate it 4.4 from about 1,200 reviews, and the recent ones flag price against value.
Drift doesn’t publish pricing. G2’s pricing listing and buyer guides report the Premium tier at about $2,500 a month billed annually, with Advanced and Enterprise quoted higher. There’s no free plan.
Best for: a B2B company with a sales team, a pipeline to fill and a marketing budget that treats $30,000 a year as normal.
Limitations: it isn’t a support tool, so there’s no ticketing and no knowledge base, and the entry price is out of reach for most small businesses. Our Drift alternatives post has the cheaper routes.
How to choose live chat software for small business
The right pick depends on what else the same people do all day. Match your situation to the tool rather than the feature list.
- One person, no budget yet: Tidio’s free plan, then Starter when you pass 50 conversations a month.
- A store on WooCommerce or SureCart with two to ten people: ThriveDesk, so the chat, the email thread and the order share one screen.
- Already on Freshdesk: Freshchat, and accept the second bill.
- Dedicated chat agents, email handled elsewhere: LiveChat for the visitor tracking.
- Mostly email, occasional chat: Help Scout, on the free plan until the sixth user.
- A SaaS with an onboarding flow to message: Intercom, with Fin’s per-resolution fee in the budget.
- A B2B sales pipeline: Drift, if the price fits.
Whatever you pick, price it at the team size you’ll have in a year, not the one you have today. Per-seat tools are cheap for one person and expensive for five, and the add-ons (a bot here, a knowledge base there) tend to arrive in month three. The help desk cost calculator does that sum for the tools above.
Why teams choose ThriveDesk for small-business live chat
Small businesses pick ThriveDesk for the same four reasons they leave the other tools on this list. None of them is a feature the others lack outright. It’s that the pieces come together in one plan.
The price stops moving. Five agents on LiveChat’s Team plan cost $245 a month on annual billing. Five on ThriveDesk Standard cost $69, and unlimited on Unlimited cost $129. The pricing page has no per-seat line and no per-resolution meter.
Chat and email share one queue. The shared inbox treats a chat and the email that follows it as one conversation, with automation rules that route, tag and assign so a two-person team isn’t triaging by hand. Saved replies and collision detection come on Basic, not on an upgrade.
The order is in the conversation. WooCommerce, Shopify, SureCart, Stripe and Paddle data shows next to the message, and the agent can act on it there. That’s the question a store gets most, answered without a second tab.
Neo covers the hours you don’t. Neo answers from the help center at 2 a.m., collects the lead, and leaves a summary for the morning. When it can’t answer, it hands over instead of guessing. There’s no per-resolution fee for any of it.
